Tetsuya and co. prioritize Final Fantasy XIII over that Versus thing (updated with scans)

In this week’s Famitsu, Tetsuya Nomura goes on record saying that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is being temporarily put on the back burner, in favor of focusing development efforts on Final Fantasy XIII. This is to say, many members of the Versus XIII development team have been brought over to help with the non-versus XIII.

Neither game will be playable at the Square Enix party in August, and whether they’ll be so in time for the fall’s Tokyo Game Show is also not yet known. Always attempting to create as long of a track for the Hype Train as possible, Nomura said that there’d be big revelations at the party, and even bigger shockwaves will be sent through the gaming world when the titles are shown at the TGS.

Professional analysts have speculated that if Square Enix focused its hyping and vague-trailer-making efforts on development, Final Fantasy XIII may have had a Japanese release date within early 2008.
