5 Most Anticipated RPGs – October 2011

By Heath | October 16, 2011 at 7:46 pm

As of right now, these are the most anticipated RPGs. Because for some reason we need to keep saying this: These games do not necessarily come out this month or even this year — this is only an anticipation gauge. (We have to say again: all games on this and future lists must actually be officially announced, so we can’t put stuff like “Final Fantasy XXX” or “World of Warcraft 2,” even though that would be awesome. A game is no longer eligible for voting once it ships in North America.

Well, Xenoblade didn’t quite make the cut despite my strong wishes for a North American version (don’t make me import! I’ll do it!), and sadly, a list of only 5 cannot give shouts to all of the great looking and exciting RPGs looming in the future. Just a few that got some vote love but couldn’t make it into the list were Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Bravely Default, Tales of Xillia, and Tales of Graces f. Here are your 5 most anticipated RPGs:

5) Grand Knights History (PSP)
This one, I’m surprised about. Given the PSP’s lower popularity in the West, I was surprised to see not one but two PSP games tap this list. Yet here we are, with the selling power of Final Fantasy‘s name hurling Type-0 in the number one spot while Vanillaware’s great reputation among its loyal fanbase pushed it into the final spot on this often-too-short list. If you don’t know Vanillaware, check out Odin Sphere and GrimGrimoire, now re-released as “PS2 Classics” on the PSN Store.

4) Diablo III (PC)
Given the outrageous popularity of the first two — especially the second — it’s pretty obvious there are going to be a lot of people waiting to jump on this one the very second it becomes available. After a brief vacation, we welcome Diablo III back to the list.

3) Ni no Kuni (PS3)
The readers are agreeing with the staff on this one, as @TheRaos voted for this and a few others that sadly can’t fit into the top 5. @meetmeintokyo was a little more specific, saying only “Ni no Kuni.”

2) The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PC, PS3, 360)
For the first time of 2011 that I can remember, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim falls out of the number 1 spot despite the strong showing from folks like @alishuja. With it coming out next month, it would seem logical that it will reclaim its throne one more time before making its shelf debut on 11/11/11. Of course, that’s up to you, though.

1) Final Fantasy Type-0 (PSP)
Last Month, I was surprised to see this one getting votes, yet here we are this month with it somehow dethroning longtime champ Skyrim. It was the most commonly listed game on the polls, as Daniël Song’s Facebook-based vote simply said “Final Fantasy Type Zero” and nothing more. Charlie W said via email, “If it’s not getting HD Vita treatment then I’ll buy back another PSP and that game will be mine.”
