Shop Watch November 2011

War in the North may kick off the month, but SkyRim’s mid-month release will probably blow War in the North out of the sky.

Unless you’re a Call of Duty or Uncharted fan.

I have very little experience with the Elder Scrolls series.  I own an Oblivion GOTY Edition, but have only played a little of it.  I seem to be agoraphobic in RPGs.  Open-ended gameplay can be a little overwhelming to me.

Titles shipping the week of November 1

Lord of the Rings: the War in the North, published by Warner Bros. (PC, PS3, 360).  Similar to LotR: Conquest in terms of action, War in the North covers events in the northern part of Middle Earth.  Not a strong stretch of imagination there.  The game is supposed to feature a conversation system reminiscent of Mass Effect and upgradeable skills reminiscent of most RPGs released in the past year.

Fate/Extra, published by Aksys (PSP).  Fate/Extra is an alternate retelling of Fate/Stay Night visual novel with a bit of the social graces of the latter Persona games.  Type-Moon has also thrown in some references to their other works.  This may very well shape up to be playable visual novel cameo porn.

Titles in store 11/11/11

The Elder Scrolls V: SkyRim, published by Bethesda (PC, PS3, 360).  While the release date screams Dreamcast, this is Bethesda’s flagship open-ended series which covers more area than some countries and sends agoraphobics running for a box.  Call of Duty is also out this week, so be prepared for people to look at you funny for not buying Call of Duty.

Titles shipping the week of November 12

Dungeons & Dragons Classic Anthology and the Dungeons & Dragons: Neverwinter Nights Collection, published by Atari (PC).  Two anthologies of games, with one collecting the entire Neverwinter Nights saga.  These aren’t bad deals.

Some Advice:  Buy the Fate/Extra game if you are interested.  The physical retail PSP titles are being produced in fewer quantities  Hell, Square is still on the fence about a NorthAm release for Final Fantasy: Type 0 last I checked.

Everything else this month will drop in price or be released later for less buck with more content.  Ain’t that right, Bethesda?

The Future:  Star Wars: The Old Republic next month.  And then FXIII-2 next year.
