RPG Deals 5/10 – 5/16

Another round on a Fable 2 deal? It’s the new Fallout 3! Except that’s here too.

K-Mart leads this week with Fable 2 for $30. I guess K-Mart took a look at Best Buy’s ads from last week and decided it was a good idea. Take a peak at some of their other games – K-Mart is pretty infamous for putting decent stuff on clearance. On a similar note, Gamestop’s $5 off Fable 2 ended today with a surpise marketing update.

Best Buy, fine purveyor of strange deals since Circuit City went under, has some of these said sales still going on. I’ve found many a Square RPG for differing percentages off in their DS section. Another Best Buy had Eternal Sonata on the PS3 as part of a Buy 1 Get ??? off the second game. While you’re looking for that $40 copy of Fallout 3 on the PC be sure to check out their clearance racks.

My 360 died in a less than usual way, so until I can either get it replaced or save up for the new one I may have to buy, I’ve been looking at older games I might have missed out on. Another forum member suggested Planescape: Torment – a great idea – and I set off to find it.

The first thing to pop up for a web search is the godawful high prices the original disc fetches for. At least $50 for a game once found at Wal-Marts and Best Buys in a $5 jewel case. Another search brought up places like GameTap and FilePlanet. These are good places to get hard-to-find games, but GameTap requires a monthly subscription fee and FilePlanet a membership. I did not check out the membership but it does not seem too terrifying and the service provide free demos to download. Of course, there was a third, nigh-unspoken option to come up during the searches.

If I haven’t said this before, I’ll say it now: There’s absolutely no reason to pay an overinflated fee to a third party for a game that is no longer available unless you are a collector. And even then it’s a pretty lousy idea. I’ll leave the acquisition to you, but the absurdity of the situation should come across. That $50 for Planescape was for a damaged copy. Decent copies start at $70 dollars and good ones near $100.

This is why I’m always going to raise my hand in support of digital distribution. Konami putting out Suikoden on the PSN was a great idea; a shame they did not follow up with Suikoden 2.

Enough kvetching for today. Keep your eyes peeled for deals, and happy hunting.

Disclaimer: Deals may not be available in all stores. Prices in each store may differ. You can try different stores to mitigate this, and always ask if a store has it before writing them off. You might be able to get a raincheck. A lot of these deals are in-store only, except where specified.
