Bravely Default “Now THAT’s an RPG!” – Square Enix Interview with RPG Land

While hitting up the show floor at TGS, we got a chance to sit down with Tomoya Asano, the producer of the upcoming Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. Mr. Asano has previously served as the producer for Hikari no 4 Senshi, and the DS remakes of Final Fantasys III and IV. We discussed the upcoming Bravely Default, which will release in Japan on October 11.

Shin Unozawa thinks Japan’s game industry has an image problem

Every year, TGS forum brings important industry figures together to debate and discuss important trends in the market and industry. This year’s first keynote speech was made by Shin Unozawa, the new Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) chairman and current Vice President of Namco Bandai games. The topic is one that has been debated around the internet in much less eloquent terms: “What Japan’s Game Industry Needs: The Outlook for the New Era of Game Business,” or in internet speak, why the Japanese Game industry is doomed, and how we can fix it.

Fantasy Life TGS Hands-on Preview

Fantasy Life, on paper, seems like a perfect fit for plenty of JRPG fans. It’s co-developed by rising star Level 5 and old standby Brownie Brown, featuring music by Nobuo Uematsu, character designs by Yoshitaka Amano, and features a lighthearted tone that washes away the gritty, angsty funk of Serious Business JRPGs. But TGS tradition seems to require that I rail on a promising game for having a disappointing demo. This year, Fantasy Life is that game.

Sol Trigger Hands-on Preview

Today I saw a banner on the show floor declaring that Sol Trigger is “The last JRPG.” I was really confused until I realized that Sol Trigger was developed by Image Epoch, a company with a few games under the “JRPG” label, and the “last” refers to it being the last PSP game under that label.
