What are the greatest game endings you've ever seen?
And if you want to be a real sport, tell us why!

Personally, I'll never forget the ending of ICO. That was one of the highlights of my gaming life. At the beginning of the game, you wouldn't think you'd be having those emotions at the end of it.

I don't know about everyone else, but I like endings where not everything ends all happy and carefree. Maybe it's my infernal love of irony, but those seem to be the best.

As for my favorite ending to a game, (what a horrible question to ask, now you have made me think!) I'd have to say it's Final Fantasy VI. I don't really have a rhyme or reason. It was cool, I guess. Even though things were pretty much happy towards the end, there was still alot of random stuff to fix. Like, for instance, the fact that the world was in ruin... yeah, that bites.

Oh, and for future reference in this thread, mark spoilers. I don't think way old games like FF6 need marked for stuff like that, but say, stuff in the current generation should be marked, and others at your own disgretion, I guess.

VIII was good, but I couldn't help but feel a little "and then what?" about it. Maybe it's just me, but I was hoping for a little more. Like

**MINOR SPOILER**

Laguna actually coming out and telling Squall whether or not he was his father. (I just hate cryptic people!)

good topic idea! I could think of a ton....One I could think of is Final Fantasy Tactics. This game's story all the way through was just amazing and the ending was nice. I'll get back with some more....

NR, you get my undying respect for mentioning the ending of ICO in this thread. Seriously, that game had such an emotional impact on me it's rediculous. Even moreso than the actual ending, I think the scene where Ico jumps the bridge gap and Yorda just can't hold on is among the highest points in my gaming career... Man just talking about it is making me want to start up a new game and play through it again. Good lord I love that game.

Another one of my favourite endings (I know, shoot me now) is Secret of Mana. The final confrontation of the game in and of itself is bittersweet, but when the game closes out and you see Popoie sitting alone in that tree with that sad music playing in the background... Man it gets me every time. I've beaten that game at least two dozen times and I still shed tears over it when I beat it.

Spoilers for...well...god if you need this warning, go play the game, fool.

-----------------bzzt--------------------------------

Chrono Trigger. I just love how the final battle built me up and the ending just let it all out perfectly. Just drifting away on balloons...to that awesome music. Yeah...s'good.

---------------FFX Spoilars below---------------

I also thought FFX had a good ending... As much as people harp on Tidus, I kept hoping he wouldn't have to...y'know. Kinda sad...

-------------EB Spoilars below too!----------

And then there's Earthbound... This one is a little hard to describe. Basically it's a work of mad genius. I think the thing that makes most people stand up and notice is the entire ending is open...you can go ANYWHERE in the world pretty much. See how people are doing. Hear the thank yous. That's something you don't get to do often. It's completely up to you when you want to go home and look at the credits.

I'm somewhat of a sucker for happy endings. Most prominent in my mind would be Final Fantasy IX. I'll refrain from spoiling it for those of you who haven't beaten it yet (shame on you!) but suffice it to say, it made me feel as though all was right with the world. Mini Vivis? Hell yeah.

Of course I have to mention my favorite game of all time, Final Fantasy VI. It wasn't a sappy ending really, but it fit perfectly. Gave me the perfect amount of closure. Mmhmm...

And yes. Super Mario Brothers 2... That one was great. >.> <.<

But, wasn't FFVI just the niftiest ending? Although,

**MINOR SPOILER**

I didn't wait for Shadow when I played it through the first time, so the poor guy died. Sad. So not only was the world in ruin, but one of my favorite charcters bit the dust!

SPOILERS FOR MULTIPLE ENDINGS OF GAMES, SCROLL AT YOUR OWN RISK (that should definately work. Wink )

X's ending was really good. A testament to it's power is that my cousin showed me the ending one full year before I played the game. Even as I played it, and knew was gonna happen, I still shed a tear at that ending.

Kingdom Hearts had a good ending too, kind of Bittersweet, everything ending ok for the main characters, but their friends sacrificed themselves to keep things in order.

Final Fantasy VIII was kinda cool in that ended with the "home-video" recording, and Zell finally got his hot-dogs!

And finally, Final Fantasy V. There was nothing special about the story of this ending, it's your typical happy ending. However, I don't think I'll ever forget just how cool it was, with Krile on her dragon, swooping across the skies, while Bartz, Reina, and Faris rode underneath on Chocobos, and "The New Origin" burst out of the speakers.

Tactics ending was very cool, that game's whole story together is just awesome.

Trekking through the entire deep dungeon was really fun and frustrating. Especially when you'd get 2 out of the 3 items and have to start over.. grrr. Fortunately with alot of patience I made it through to the end of it. Wasn't that impressed with Byblos though.
