So like, I come home from work yesterday to find the internet not working. No big deal for a short while, right? I relizzaxe for a good 2 hours or so before I have to go to work, but real quick style place a call to my ISP. They said yeah, they're doing a little work in my area and it should be back working within another few hours.

Okay, I can deal. I have work anyway.

So I get home and it's still being gay. I ry my housemate's computer and it's fine. I call Comcast again; the maintenence ended hours ago. We go through all kinds of troubleshooting and hooplah. They can do nothing. I call HP tech support. After an hour of uninstalling things, reinstalling things, running all kinds of tests, turning things off and on and all manner of trial and error, it was determined the the motheroard is indeed, fijucked. $106 later, here I am waiting for the repair guy to show up either Friday or next week.

Worst thing is, in order to determine it was a hardware problem, we had to wipe my computer clean of EVERYTHING. I crammed what I could onto 3 DVD-R's, but it wasn't everything I wanted... Geh. That sucks.

Just felt like venting that. Rolling Eyes

Your tech support fails. Determining it's the motherboard before wiping the hard drive works nice. Why only 3? Ran out?

Yeah. I really wish we hadn't wiped the HD. Geh. I feel like I saved most of the "MUST SAVE" stuff, but there will still be some time involved in getting the programs and stuff I had before -_-

Plus I just know I'm gonna realize in a month or so "Oohhh shiiiii" and remember something I didn't back up.

Having been there and done that, I can almost guarantee you that a few weeks/months down the road you'll remember some random *important* program that you rarely use, and desperately need.

Man, that sucks.

Heh, 3 DVD's worth of pr0n. Awesome, I could probably only manage two...

In other news: A new PCI ethernet card costs <$10. Did I miss something, or is that all that's fuxed?

that sucks. You'd think support could figure out it was the motherboard without cleaning everything out. One of the many reasons I do my own support. Bastards.

So did you already order a new motherboard? I hope you invested in a PCI Express compatible motherboard.

The card is part of my motherboard.

that sucks...

but your not the only person with computer problems.

I was using my pvr feature on my all-in wonder vid card and it was recording video with no sound.

So I thought maybe there is something wrong with my sound card? BIG MISTAKE. I uninstalled the card and along with that some windows drivers but for some reason the warning didn't come up saying that some of those drivers might be shared. Now when I start my computer it keeps going in a constant loop. I'm trying to go through the recovery console from my xp cd but nothing is working thus far. I know how it feels. I hate when problems snowball....

and I hope to GOD my situation doesn't end up like yours. I don't wanna wip my hard drive and re-install my windows...

I'll figure this mess out somehow..

No shit? You're going to have to explain to me how that would make you unable to just get a new card for $10 and use that one instead? You can disable onboard hardware in your BIOS n00bsicle.

Apparently you can't.

Yeah, if you have built in ethernet, just put in a card. The card can override the on-board and away you go. If more than just that's gunked up though, you'll still need the board. Lacking the full situation I can only leave you to your possibly-being-ripped-off tech support.

If it was only the internet then it definately could have been the onboard ethernet and yes you can use a ethernet card instead of the onboard device. I had that setup a while back myself. I think I have a extra ethernet card laying around even that I could send to you if need be Smile

But the motherboard wib't DETECT ethernet stuffs. I confirmed with John, a guy that lives in my house who had the same concern initially. If the motherboard isn't detecting any ethernet of any kind, it can't be fixed with a little part. I had him ask this same thing over the phone; believe me, if I could save $85, I gladly would. Sad

You should buy a 9 and then take the old motherboard out back at like midnight. Then use it for target practice, shouting "Can't touch this!" over and over. How long would it take for the cops to swarm your place only to see you angrily staring down a mutilated motherboard holding an empty 9? Gah, I get bored too easily.

Did you try putting in a card? If it can't detect the onboard ethernet that doesn't mean it can't detect a ethernet card... that would mean it isn't able to detect your pci slots or whatever you use... which I'm assuming it does considering your video card or whatever else is in there seemed to be working, correct?

well...I guess it all depends on where the mobo got juiced, but I haven't heard of a mobo that doesn't support pci/usb ethernet(isa or serial if it's REALLY old)...seriously, NR, you need to hit up and try a $10 NIC before you go out and spend mega on a new mobo. And you'll feel better about it if it turns out that a NIC will solve all your problems.

The onboard fried on my wife's desktop and I simply replaced it with a PCI $10 NIC from Best Buy. I used the installation CD that came with it and everything was keen in 5 minutes, np.

(NIC = Network Interface Card, in case anyone is unfamiliar) Ethernet Card....

Hope this helps.

Well, too late now. The guy already came and fixed it. I'm re-Heathing this machine as we speak.

Honestly though, HP didn't gain anything from this, so I don't see what motivation they'd have to tell me buying a card wouldn't work. The only money I paid was to the technician himself for labor, who was from CompUSA. If I'd chosen to wait about two weeks while I sent the thing away, HP would have fixed it for free and paid for the shipping.

As a side note, I'm using Opera right now, and in terms of our site, this browser makes it look the hottest.

They probably just didn't know? Tech support can be really lacking. Since I've left Rangenet my brother tells me they have this moron working there that he should fire but doesn't.....

at any rate, glad everything is working now...

I really wish I could copy and paste the explanation he gave on the phone, so we'd know for sure >_<
