Last night I had the honor of representing RPGLand in an invitation only media conference call with the following Mythic Studios Warhammer
Online Team:
Paul Barnett – Senior Designer
Jeff Hickman – Producer
Lance Robertson – Producer
Josh Drescher - Senior Designer

The purpose of the call was to shed light on the Empire and Chaos armies. Now I would like to share some highlights of the evening:

Brief descriptions of both armies
The Empire Army is all about humanity struggling to survive. Very Anglo-Saxon and medieval; their classes will include The Bright Wizard, Warrior Priest, Witch Hunter, and Knight of the Blazing Sun. The Empire is considered the "good" human army, but a better descriptor may be, not quite as evil as Chaos.

The Chaos Army represents humanity's total perversion of themselves and what they can become. Described as a feel similar to Vikings, or as one of the Mythic team put it,
Quote:
Humans with tentacles!!
Among their classes will include the Chosen, Magus, Zealot, and the Marauder.

As reported in RPGLand's previous Warhammer online preview, players' characters will visibly change as the gain in strength. Unlike the Dwarves with their ever growing beards, or the Orcs who grow in size, Humans take a much more organic and historical approach. The humans of the Empire and Chaos armies will collect trophies from their fallen foes which they can wear as decoration and proof of their combat prowess.

Some other tidbits of information non-related to the Empire or Chaos armies were also released.

Death Penalty in WAR will be handled in a much different fashion than many MMOs of the past. According to the WAR team there will be no death penalty inflicted on characters in PvE deaths other than the time lost to revive and run back. More specifically they said there would be no Gold loss, Experience loss, or Resurrection sickness.

Also released, each region and zone will have drastic changed in visuals depending on the army that controls that zone. With a cursory glance a player should be able to easily determine who is, at least for now, the ruling army of the zone.

Travel Management: WAR will feature Personal Transportation (mounts), Mass transportations which will consist of point a-b travel on a predetermined route, also mentioned was the Orc-a-pault. The devs made mention that they believe it asinine to force players to travel to a location before having the ability to travel there.

During the course of the evening I had a few of my questions answered,

RPGLand - "Of the two new armies, which was the most fun to work on and produced the most creativity amongst the team? "
Quote:
“From the beginning everyone has only wanted to work on Chaos. Team members where willing to sell their own mother to work on the Evil side and Chaos.”

RPGLand - "What are the thoughts of the team on selling virtual items from Warhammer for 'real' currency? If you are not in favor of it what are some steps planned to keep this from happening?"
Quote:
Mark Jacobs and Mythic as a development company has taken a hard stance against any and all forms of “crossover” selling. We will be opposing it whole heartedly while we do not currently have systems built into the game to prevent this we will do what we need to too combat gold and item farmers.

It appears that Warhammer online is shaping up to deliver players an extremely visceral, if only T rated, PvP MMO action.

Stick around for future Warhammer Online updates here at RPGLand!

No punishment for playing stupidly? Lame.

The game has a lot going for it, and I most likely will be picking it up... but the lack of a death penalty means a lack of any real learning, and that is a very bad thing when playing with other people. It's like gambling where you can't lose money - what's the point?

Fun?

I play poker with my buddies 3 times a week for a couple hours. And only once in awhile we actually gamble.

And they think that yet another generic, high-fantasy MMO is going to make money with a giant like WoW out there?

Would you pay money to gamble with your buddies and not get anything out of it outside of fun? How about if your buddies were replaced with 250,000 people you didn't know who didn't have the same grasp as the game as you and, having nothing to lose, never took the time to learn?

This isn't a game that'll be played with a close group of friends, like a game with LAN capability might. This'll be a MMO, a breathing world with a lot of people you won't like in it, and the programmers are encouraging stupidity and hindering the play of everyone else by taking out all styles of death penalties.

Point of contention, but even if you pay money, running with the gambling analogy, you run the risk of coming out with nothing but fun ANYWAYS. Gambling for money doesn't guarantee you'll come out with any, and a lot of people regard gambling for money as the fundsink that it is, yet play nevertheless.

They might be able to if they do the pvp right.

There is punishment. If you watched the podcast you would see that you can actually take over land and contested territories.

You also have to keep in mind that this game will be mostly based on pvp. Not carebears going into instances and killing npcs.

I've noticed that Sethi takes his MMO's very seriously.

No solo play. No lenient punishment for dying. Wow. Sounds like a bucket of fun, let me tell you.

sh-- man... I hate losing EXP when you die. I lost 2 levels in FFXI because of getting fijucked up. That's gay sh-- and a large contributing factor to why I quit. Resurrection sickness is also gay.

I don't play a game (and pay for a game monthly) to get punished for the occasional time that I mess up a little and kick the bucket and to have to learn how to play perfectly so that I don't `encourage stupidity and hinder the play of everyone else`. I play (and again, pay) for a game to have fun.

Getting raped because I kicked it, isn't fun.

Why can't a MMO just be enjoyable without punishing you for getting fijucked up once in awhile... You're logic is completely flawed.

If it's land at stake then it makes sense not to have a character based punishment. Hopefully they get it right. I used to play Warhammer back in the day and enjoyed it. Hopefully they can capture the feel for more then just aesthetics.

First off it's not high fantasy really and second no one needs to be near the numbers as WoW has to be profitable. If you can post a steady stream of around 100k most MMOs are considered hugely successful. It doesn't take much to make the money in MMOs and it's a steady stream of income. No one right now is trying to beat WoW, just siphon off some of their users to establish their own little niche. Although I will agree I want some sci-fi MMOs, I'm sick of SWG being the only one besides EVE.

I think Idin and Sethi are both in a growingly extreme minority of MMO
players that most MMO developers are really not even trying to cater to
anymore. PVP is added to most MMO's mostly as an afterthought now,
and casual, solo play with very little risk seems par for the course to cater
to John Q Weekendwarrior.

And yes. Warhammer is high fantasy. Really. And quite generic to boot.
That game is indestinguishable from nearly every fantasy MMO I've seen
in the last 5 years.

I'd agree with you on what it takes to be profitable if you had some hard
numbers, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say neither of us knows for
certain what it takes to make money with an MMO. Between all the
people staffed for GM duty, expansion devs and patch departments, who
can say what the cost to income ratio is for any given game? The bottom
line is that a lot of these games close down after a few years and
Warhammer doesn't seem like a particularily strong franchise to build an
MMO on, but I could be wrong.

Uhh.. Well I should just link to the podcast since everyone seems to be stupid on this subject.

http://www.blasteroids.com/games/file_details.cfm/11025/warhammer_online_age_of_reckoning

May I also say that games like Darkfall have a massive following based on the PVP it promises.

Pirates of the Burning Sea is also promises very awesome PVP.

Pirates, Darkfall, and Warhammer all are going to almost soley based on PVP. It is something that WOW ignored. Now they are going to start taking away from the player base that plays WOW the most which are the PVPers. Because what the hell else are you going to do once you hit 70? Most likely PVP.

It is a growing need that has not been really satisfied lately on the fantasy MMO's since Shadowbane(pretty much RIP) and pre UO:R which is outdated now.
