| Quote: | | For a game dubbed a sort of "Disney RTS" by its creators, there are some surprising sexual themes within the story, a lot of which surrounds one certain devil, who is a professor at the school and resident pedophile. I'm pretty sure I had him in fifth grade. |

I'm the opposite. The more I read the less it sounds interesting at all. _________________

| After playing for a while, I'm kinda middle ground. It's not great, but it's been pretty fun. I don't picture a whole lot of people falling into my category though; I imagine this game being very polarizing. |

I personally think it sounds really interesting and cool....however I completely SUCK at RTS's so if this one is even as complicated as the original Command & Conquer, I'll probably have to pass. _________________ As can be seen, witty is not my strong suit. |

Two of the image links lead to pictures of the title logo.
I'm morbidly curious how this one will turn out. |

Here is a review, which will function as a follow-up to this:
http://rpgland.com/games/grimgrimoire/preview2.html
It turned out pretty entertaining, overall, but it definitely has its niche. One does not necessarily HAVE to love RTS games to enjoy it; in fact, it might be slightly better suited for those who have minimal experience in the genre. But one thing is for sure: players of this game, virtually without exception, must enjoy the general quirky, extra Japanese atmosphere of other games directed at Vanillaware/NIS/Gust/NIS America's usual audience. That is to say, those who like NONE of the following should avoid this game: Disgaea, Atelier Iris, Odin Sphere, Ar Tonelico, Generation of Chaos, La Pucelle Tactics. Didn't like any of them, for whatever reason? Avoid GrimGrimoire, despite it being a different genre. It has that same weirdness a lot of people just plain don't like.
Objectives and tactics from battle to battle within the storyline will remain mostly the same throughout the game, but there are situational changes necessary that help it avoid becoming boring.
The story also unfolds rather interestingly. It's the same five-day loop repeated several times, but Lillet has more knowledge and a different plan each time, so things are still pretty neat to watch, and there are some genuinely cool twists.
Just like Vanillaware's recently released Odin Spehere, the visuals are awesome. The music is okay too, though sound effects can get old after so long. Voice acting is done rather well, and most voices fit their characters.
Adding to replay value are the bonus challenges. For each day passed, an additional battle with variations on conditions and scenarios. They're occasionally fun to check out, even though they aren't necessary for completetion of the main quest.
Strategy buffs may or may not like GrimGrimoire, based on whether or not they can handle the Fairyland atmosphere and whether they can cope with an RTS not being controlled with a keyboard and mouse. Those alreayd within NISA's niche will probably love GrimGrimoire; those not already down will probably be better off staying that way.
Gameplay 7
Story 7
Graphics 10
Sound/Music 6
Replay Value 5
Overall: 7/10
The verdict: Very Good*
* = Though, in case it wasn't clear, this rating is given moslty for those already within NISA's unconditional love clan. It should be noted: not highly recommended to most folks on this forum. |
