Straight from Turbine's site: http://ac2.turbine.com/index.php?page_id=384
| Quote: | Dear AC2 subscribers,
In spite of our hard work and the launch of Legions, AC2 has reached the point where it no longer makes sense to continue the service. We will be officially closing the Asheron's Call 2 service on 12/30/05. Until then, we plan to run live events, but we will not be adding any content or features.
We deeply appreciate the many dedicated fans of AC2 who have stood by us over the years. You have our sincerest gratitude.
Best regards,
Jeffrey Anderson

Whoa. I knew both Asheron's Call games had comparatively low populations, but I didn't see this coming. If anything, I though the FIRST game would be the one to die. Yikes.
So what do you gather from this, if anything? Who's next? Do you think World of Warcraft had anything to do with it? I seem to recall AC2 having high system requirements. Think that had anything to do with it?

Out of AC and AC2. AC kills it and the community is still there.
I'm not sad to see AC2 go, it was one of my biggest MMORPG dissappointments and one that didn't last past the first month. AC however was and still is a awesome game. I wanted to buy the expansion but I have to hold off and not signup again. _________________

Hmm. I've heard a pretty mixed bag of comments as to who prefers #1 or #2 over the other, but I suppose the numbers that matter have already spoken.
I now wonder about games like Ultima Online and Saga of Ryzom (though more for Ryzom because UO players are stubborn as hell). Dark Age of Camelot has actually been going up in numbers lately, so that one I don't think needs to be concerned. _________________ If you buy stuff from Play Asia, help support RPG Land. Exactly, they aren't cancelling AC so obviously AC2 didn't live up to it.
I played AC for quite a while and that game really has alot going for it. AC2 did not. It strayed away from what set AC apart and became a boring/flat but pretty MMORPG. Almost everyone I talked to ingame during that time really loved AC more.
I'm not too worried about UO. Think that one will be around for a long time to come. Still quite a few addicts.
It all depends on how much it is costing to keep the game going. Alot of these really don't take much upkeep and as long as they can pay for employees/servers they can stay around so it just shows how sad AC2 became.
WoW has just taken over too much _________________

Yeah. Granted, AC1 probably has a lower cost to keep running (I'm assuming here. Lower graphical fancy stuff and all that. I dunno. Seems logical), but its head is still above water even with just 20-30k subscribers. For reference, EQ2 has nearly 400k, WoW has 4mill, CoH and DAoC have about 60k each. AC is by no means a popular game, and yet it's alive, so yeah, to back you up there, AC2 must have been doing terribly. _________________ If you buy stuff from Play Asia, help support RPG Land. Oh yeah I'm not saying AC is popular but the strength of a solid player base that has stuck around is. Like we've pointed out. It doesn't take that much to stay afloat.
AC was always a underrated game. Playing on DarkTide was some of the funnest MMORPG times I had. Ugh... now you got me wanting to go ingame.. lol _________________
