I wanted to believe the Penguin hype, but something deep inside me was scared of Philly. I really think they're the one team in the East that could bounce Pittsburgh like this, and now it's probably happening.

They were down 2-0 against Detroit and won the cup though, so I realize it's not over yet. Still, ouch, down 2 games to none and heading back to Philly.

Well losing the first two at home didn't slow Boston down last year, but it certainly doesn't help. Philly is a good team and I still love Danny Briere. One of the best big game players in the league right now. The winner of that series is taking the East. Boston/NYR aren't selling me.

Anybody catch the Coyotes/Blackhawks games? This has been one of the most nail-biting series i've ever seen. It may beat the Blackhawks/Canucks serires from last year.

Yeah I watched that -- tense as hell all game long.

Much as I hated the two Philly comebacks, those plus today's PHO/CHI game and the WSH/BOS double overtime game have already made this year's playoffs real exciting.

Crazy part is that PHO/CHI game was probably the tamest of the three last night. OTT/NYR was a total bloodbath. Watch the highlights there if you like seeing dudes get jumped and beat on until they fall...then beat on some more. Something must be in the water this year because this is even crazier than usual. I mean, usually it takes them a game or two to hate each other right? Great stuff.

Yup. Philly looks amped as shit. Would not want to play that team.

Not gonna lie. It makes me grin a little only because how much ESPN was touting the Penguins as unstoppable god-men because of Sidney "The Christchild" Crosby coming back.

Yeah I'm a Pens fan and even I got kinda sick of how invincible sportscasters were making the team out to be. I can see them being the favorite from the outset -- oh my, yes -- but some people were talking like...there were no other teams involved.

To anyone bitching about Crosby flipping a guy's glove away from him:

Chris Pronger, Cup Finals, game pucks.
Yeah.
Don't talk like Philly doesn't do the saaaaaame shiiiiiit.

Chrissy Pronger is the only reason I can't cheer for the Flyers.

There seems to be a lot more bad sportsmanship this year. Or maybe I'm just noticing it more.

There's a few reasons for that.

It's always been like that. It's just that this year has been way more physical than previous years. It's the time when guys go headhunting, provoke fights, and risk possible fines/suspension just to get another player benched or removed for 1 game. Not to mention the mental edge it gives your team if the other guys are scared to skate next to you because they're afraid you're going to smash their face into the boards.

Not to mention the rivalries that are already well established, but enhanced x10 during post-season. Penguins, Flyers, Bruins, Devils, and Capitals all have some sort of rivalry with eachother. Vancouver, Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Los Angeles, and San Jose also have some sort of rivalry with eachother. What better way to say "fuck you" to your rival team than to knock out their star player during the most important time in the season?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hockey_League_rivalries

I don't agree with dirty playing, but it's going to always be more predominant during playoff time.

It helps when any player who averages more than 20 minutes/game on the ice knows he can do whatever the hell he wants and get a fine or MAYBE one game suspension. The NHL "disciplinary committee" is a complete joke. Brendan Shanahan is just as big of a dickhead in his current position as he was on the ice. Seriously, I watched that guy deliver tons of cheap shots and cajole the refs afterwards and now HE'S the one who gets to decide if slamming a guy's head in the glass is OK?

That all goes without mentioning the abysmal referees. I've watched them lose control of at least three games already in the first round. It's only going to get worse as the games mean more. Oh well, if there's any sport that can persist through horrible officiating and at its worst just become a Royal Rumble, it's hockey.

As demonstrated by Raffi Torres, holy shnikes. That hit needs to be followed by like a 10-game suspension. Repeat offender, significant injury during the most critical time of the season, had an impact on the game and will continue to affect the series...dude, Torres needs at least 8 games and a fine.

I feel just like I did when Weber bulldogged Zetterberg. I want his team to win but dude, quit making this difficult.

No f---ing kidding! I can't believe not one ref noticed Torres leaping like a f---ing gymnast into the air and taking out Hossa. And no penalty? What an incredible crock of shit that was. Why is there no instant-replay rule for hits like that? Then Bollig gets 10 minutes in the box?

Watch Torres get a 1 game suspension and a $1500 fine.

Watch the f---ing riot that's going to happen during the next Rangers/Senators or Penguins/Flyers games and the most that'll happen is another $10,000 fine to the team. The TEAM! 10k is nothing to these teams. You might as well tell your guys to take off their skates and start stabbing like in Happy Gilmore.

The problem is that the refs have no balls. They just let things go and figure the league will take care of it. Then Brendan Shanahan throws a dart at a spinning wheel of punishments and calls it a disciplinary action.

That's especially funny because our local sports radio station actually has a Shanahan Wheel and they have a guy who does an impression of voice/wheel spin and everything for each suspension.

It's a disgrace. They need to standardize everything and take it out of these guys' hands. Elbow to the head major? 3 games. Bare minimum. Every time. Charging (Torres)? 1 game. Bare minimum. Every time. And if they want to increase, that's fine, but no going below. I think even the players would appreciate knowing exactly what's coming before they take their pads off after the game.

Torres banned until Friday's hearing.

So at the least, he'll be out tomorrow's game.
