Kingdom Hearts II

When you wish upon a star...

Ever since its dramatic conclusion in 2002, fans of Kingdom Hearts were left on a serious cliffhanger. Square Enix followed the hit PS2 game with the Game Boy Advance's Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories in 2004, that served as a direct sequel to the original, but it still didn't answer everything completely. With Kingdom Hearts II, Square Enix is likely to bring forth all the answers to these questions.

The last time we left our heroes, Sora, Donald, and Goofy ventured forth to look for King Mickey and Riku; Mickey and Riku where doing the same. Will they finally meet up? This adventure will also answer the rumour about who those masked men are.

Kingdom Hearts II sees some new worlds added to the series. New to the mix is Beast's Castle, The Land of Dragons, and Port Royal. The Beast's Castle tells the story of Beauty and the Beast, The Land of Dragon's is all about Mulan, and Port Royal is remenisent of Pirates of the Carribean. Previous lands and newer locales will also make appearances, as characters from other Disney movies including The Nightmare Before Christmas and Lion King are showcased in media.

Battles in Kingdom Hearts II have a new twist with the addition of two new gameplay elements: "Drive Mode" an "Team Attacks." In Drive Mode, Sora is able to "fuse" with a party member, allowing him to turn into a more powerful version of himself, which gives him new moves and a new look.
Team Attacks are exactly what they sound like: attacks involving the whole team. Sora and another party member are able to team up and unleash a powerful technique with a single button press. Instead of a basic jump, attack, and magic buttons, the triangle button is used to pre-set any combination of special attacks one may want to use during battle for easy access.

Some other gameplay advancements include the use of Sora's ability to morph into different animal forms based on which worl he's in. In order to successfully complete some missions, he must morph into that animal form to continue, because the animal form has specific abilities that will grant access to further ground in each world.

Another added feature is the timed button press that one must execute when the button shows up on the screen. When pressed correctly, Sora does a maneuver that helps get him out of tight situations. Think of something along the lines of the Quick Time Events in Shenmue, just now they're happening in battle and no one's looking for a black car.

Graphically, Kingdom Hearts II delievers the same look as the first. It's very visually detailed, and at some moments the player may feel like s/he's watching a Disney movie instead of playing the game. Finally, here's a listing of voice actors slated to appear in the game.

Kingdom Hearts II will be shipped to North American retailers on March 28.
