RPG Deals 12/20 – 12/24

By Russ | December 20, 2009 at 6:08 pm

It’s another short deals week.  Christmas will break up the week and stores will offer weekend deals for “Day-after Christmas” sales. These sales will be much more generous than what is offered this week.  I won’t be covering them, as I will be traveling Christmas day, and probably the day after.

This week has some of the games that have become holiday flagship discount titles.  Like Fallout 3 last year, Dragon Age is the title du hollidaise.

See how I failed there?

Best Buy has Dragon Age for $45 on the PS3 and 360.  It also has Fallout 3: GOTY for $40.  On the PC side Borderlands is $35, while Fallout 3: GOTY is $30.  As a side note, Dragon Age continues to deliver every time I play it.  Sadly, it’s delivering disappointment.  This is a shame.  There’s lots to do in the game, and it has BioWare’s excellent conversation system, but the battles keep jittering at the worst times, the gambit-based AI system is lacking in AI, and everything about the game has to be epic – which unfortunately includes load times.  $45 is not a bad price for the game, but I expect it to be $30 by February.  Of course, by that time another slew of RPGs will be out, but the time it will take to get through Dragon Age, some price drops on those titles may occur.

Big Lots, in a surprising turn, has the DS version of PuzzleQuest: Galactrix for $10.  Not bad, Big Lots.  They also have a lot of crap, so you might be sifting through Imagine titles or EA shovelware before you find it.

Toys R Us has two deals: Buy 3 games get the 4th free for all games under $20.  That’s a good way to pick up some cheap RPGS, especially on the PS2 and DS.  Toys R Us also has a buy get 1 50% off certain games sale, though only Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 was spotted as the closest thing to an rpg.  Left 4 Dead 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2 are part of the deal.  Thought this type might be helpful for those who play non-RPGs.

K-Mart is also offering discounted Dragon Ages for $50.  See a pattern yet?

Amazon.com tends to match prices in the weekly ads.  If a game you are looking for is out of stock at the store, try there.

Christmas is Friday, so this is the last piece of holiday advice I’ll give until November of next year.  I think only the northern part of the US will appreciate it,though:

If there’s ten inches of snow falling outside, you don’t need to be out shopping.  I don’t care what kind of truck or other exquisite mode of transportation you own; you don’t need to be out shopping.  Retail workers will get fired for not showing up, but they’ll get let out early if no one shows up.  By walking into a retail place during a time when your job would shut down for inclement weather, you are potentially delaying a worker’s return home.  You are also endangering yourself with bad road conditions.  Let’s face it; just because you know how to drive does not mean everyone else does.  Regardless of which excuse sounds better, you don’t need to be out shopping.

Happy Hunting.  When the weather’s acceptable, that is.

Disclaimer: Deals may not be available in all stores. Prices in each store may differ. You can try different stores to mitigate this, and always ask if a store has it before writing them off. You might be able to get a raincheck. A lot of these deals are in-store only, except where specified.
