A long time ago someone made the joke that if a Star Trek or Star Wars MMO were ever to be released, the powers above might as well dub it the Matrix 1.0.
Both titles were released in MMO form. And now no one talks about them. However, Star Wars: The Old Republic is out this month. Will it be the game changer the previous titles were not? It certainly looks like it could be. Should the game manage to ensnare the minds of millions; more power to it.
Titles shipping the week of November 18
Star Wars: The Old Republic, published by EA Games (PC). Set 300 years after Knights of the Old Republic II, The Old Republic is all about the Sith curb-stomping Jedi. I mean, did you see the Jedi in the first three movies? Aside from Yoda, Mace and Obi-Wan, they kind of had it coming.
Sadly, I’m pretty sure it will end nicely when the Jedi discover another magic farm boy.
Some Advice: The Old Republic is seriously the only title this month. You like? You buy. The fickle market of MMOs means either adopt early or wait and see what happens.
The Future: Final Fantasy XIII-2 is next year’s first release, and that doesn’t happen until the end of January.
All release dates are subject to change. Games available for download will have varying or staggered release dates. The views of this column do not reflect the views of RPG Land. This column brought to you by that scene in the first Old Republic trailer when the back of the shuttle opens up to reveal an assload of red lightsabers. The Jedi must be thanking the Force their typical robes are brown, and I was glad to be wearing white that day.
