Dragon Quest X: screens of the Wii MMO show good things

After taking a huge hiatus, Square Enix is finally updating fans on Dragon Quest X with regularity. Here are a whole bunch of screenshots of the offline RPG with online functionality, mostly focusing on characters and environments.  First the screens, then my own two cents.

These look pretty solid if you ask me. Are they Uncharted or Final Fantasy XIII? No, but graphigasms have never been the goal of Dragon Quest. Ever. A few games have looked pretty, particularly Dragon Quest VIII on PS2, but the series is all about providing a solid “traditional” JRPG in a fun atmosphere. They’re a level grinder’s dreamboat and have often delivered great systems and dungeons. There is a reason it’s so successful, after all.

Part X is going for something similar to Phantasy Star Online with being a fully capable offline game with online play for those that want it. A big pitch with this game is the devs’ goal of making an MMO with a much simpler interface. This is fantastic because it helps Square Enix avoid alienating the DQ fanbase. Many of them are older and could surely adapt, but at the same time, I’m gonna make the educated guess that not a whole lot have played an MMO for any length of time. Furthermore, it helps keep the series appealing to the young crowd. A complete offline experience with optional online — said online having a light interface — will bode well for Square Enix and the Dragon Quest fans.

Send along an email, Tweet, or FB comment if you feel the same or differently. I’m always willing to talk.
