RPG Deals 1/26 – 2/1

Still prognosticating after all these years.
Best Buy is offering a ‘buy 2 game gets 1 free sale’ on all PS3 and 360 titles. Best Buy is also selling Xbox Live for $40; Target is matching the Live deal. Expect Amazon to do the same.
Looking at 2014, the upcoming 3DS and Vita RPG titles look to re-invigorate the stand-alone RPG market. Handheld games go on sale at regular intervals. Western RPGs are a slow trickle when not on the PC; and Steam and Amazon seem to have that genre covered for sales. The independent market is a good pace for a mix of both western and eastern concepts, and again Steam (followed by any console releases) tends to be the locale for deals. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Dragon Fantasy and what I’ve played of its sequel; PC and PSN versions have been released alongside mobile phone versions. In short, PCs and portable systems are going to see the lion’s share (as usual) for RPGs this year.
In terms of console releases, FFXIII-3 will probably tank pretty hard. I’m sure the game could have been great but I’m certain the vocal majority wants the XIII series over. Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Xillia 2 are black sheep whose prices could go either way, though the limited editions will clean up. Dark Souls II will probably see some sales this year.
2014 is still too young to tell with two new consoles who have yet to see many of their releases. It will be interesting to see how it plays, and whether or not the above is correct.
Happy Hunting.
