Shop Watch February 2014

Really, February starts off the year for RPGs much better than January.
Hell, January’s release is now in February.
Titles shipping the week of February 2
Bravely Default, published by Square-Enix (3DS). I’ve often thought of the game as a spiritual successor to 4 Heroes of Light, which was a spiritual successor to the DS version of the Final Fantasy III; but I’m probably wrong on both accounts since I’ve only played a little of III out of all the mentioned games and thus am a terrible person. Thankfully, Heath has a review of Bravely Default here. Check out the review for more info, and check out our sidebar for RPG Land’s interview. By the way, the collector’s edition of this title is sold out at Amazon and probably will go quick.
Fable Anniversary, published by Microsoft (360). Oh, is this finally happening? While I’d like to think this is a sign of continued support for the 360 beyond this point, my better judgement (and the video game release lists) tells me that no; it’s not. This is essentially a HD re-release of Fable: the Lost Chapters.

Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns, published by Square-Enix (360, PS3). XIII-3 caps off the XIII series of games with Lightning taking center stage and saving the world. Square-Enix released a retro video to help people with the plot of the first two games. The video doesn’t help much. In fact, it just points out how convoluted the events are, and you’ll probably just watch it to enjoy something akin to Final Fantasy VI‘s sprite work with Chrono Trigger‘s background art. In the meantime, Janelle has a review to read here or through the sidebar to see how it stacks up as a game.
Some Bundles, published by 2K Games (360, PS3). A Skyrim/Bioshock Infinite and Borderlands 2/Dishonored bundle are being released this week. Neat thing to do, and is also a harbinger of system demise.

Ragnarok Odyssey ACE, published by Xseed (PS3, Vita). An upgrade to Ragnarok Odyssey for the Vita, ACE adds more quests, monsters and other things you’d expect from something with ACE in the title. This will also be the first time the game has seen a home console release.
Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny – Gold Edition (Mac, PC) So this didn’t come out last month, apparently. Way to make me a liar, vague game.

Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, published by Namco-Bandai (PS3). An HD port of Tales of Symphonia and Dawn of the New World. I believe it also includes the content from the Japanese PS2 release of Symphonia. A collector’s edition has been sold out for some time online.
Some Advice: Get the CE’s for Symphonia and Bravely Default. Square-Enix’ 3DS CEs tend to sell out fast as do Tales CEs.
The Future: Dark Souls II and Final Fantasy X/X-2 in March. April will see Final Fantasy XIV: A Real Reborn on PS4. Tales of Xillia 2 is also within a few months. Beyond that, my prog-fu is weak.
