Interview with Nippon Ichi Software
Nippon Ichi Software is the developer of hit RPGs such as Disgaea, Phantom Brave, and others; NIS America is the company’s stateside publishing studio. Various employees of NIS and NIS America (though all responses are listed as NISA) have been kind enough to talk to RPG Land about a plethora of different things. In this feature, we discuss released games, upcoming projects, complete nonesense, and plenty of other stuff. Some of these questions were inspired by you, our readers. We’re very excited to present you with this feature, so let’s get right to it…

Chapter 1: The Company
Sample Question Below:
RPG LandWith the way the battle systems in NIS games are done, the player can almost tell you had a lot of fun making these games. Is that the right impression? |
NIS AmericaAhhhh yes. We always try to have a lot of fun making our games. I mean if we cannot enjoy what we make, how could the gamers? Often times we would come up with the wildest ideas and try to implement it into the game. Sometimes it works beautifully; sometimes we fail miserably. But even if we fail, as long as we had a great time working on it, it is all good. |
Chapter 2: Past Games
Sample Question Below:
RPG LandDoes anyone at the office ever crank up the Rhapsody soundtrack? Be Honest. |
NIS AmericaYes of course! We also play Disgaea, Makai Kingdom, and Phantom Brave soundtracks. Though lately we have been playing lots of old school anime soundtracks |
Chapter 3: The Present
Sample Question Below:
RPG LandHow did NISA come to publish a game not developed by Nippon Ichi? |
NIS AmericaNippon Ichi Software in Japan usually makes 1~2 games a year. For NISA to survive we need more titles. Therefore, we contacted Gust (who develops wonderful anime influenced RPGs) to bring over some of their games like Atelier Iris. |
Chapter 4: The Future
Sample Question Below:
RPG LandHow do you feel about the next generation of consoles, in general? If you’re allowed to say, which one(s) attract(s) you the most? |
NIS AmericaThe PS3 and the Xbox 360 both look incredible. We can’t wait to try them out for ourselves. |
