RPG Deals 1/10 – 1/16

By Russ | January 10, 2010 at 1:26 pm

I could take vacations during the month of January and no one would be the wiser.  All I would have to do is list discounts on whatever is the most populous RPG at the time.

As usual, Dragon Age has a discount.  This week it’s $50 at Best Buy for the consoles.

K-Mart has Mass Effect for $10.  Insert spouting of advice to grab the two-disc edition here.

Pre-ordering is a decent way to save money on a game.  Just not at GameStop.  Amazon ensure the price you pre-ordered at, and also gives you a discount if the price goes down in between your pre-order and its shipping.

Best Buy and Target offer pre-ordering.  Typically, their orders offer a gift card when you pick up the game.  Be wary of pre-ordering from a big box store – the stores often do not guarantee the game.  I have run into a few customers at Best Buy and Target who have complained about the game not being held back.  And if the game cannot be picked up, you cannot get your gift card.

GameStop stores will ideally hold your pre-order, but with larger releases the stores are told (or will do so anyway) to sell all copies regardless of pre-order status due to an expected replenishment from the distributor the next day.  Sometimes the distribution does not come, though.  It is more likely the distribution will only fulfill a small percentage of necessary copies – such as the store overselling by twenty copies and having four replenished.  Neat pre-order bonuses, though.

Other stores handle pre-orders differently.  It’s always best to check individual policies before buying.

In other news, I would like to find a copy of Tech Romancer.

Happy Hunting.

Disclaimer: Deals may not be available in all stores. Prices in each store may differ. You can try different stores to mitigate this, and always ask if a store has it before writing them off. You might be able to get a raincheck. A lot of these deals are in-store only, except where specified.
