Shop Watch September 2018

It’s theme month, with three series returning to consoles after a long hiatus.

Last week was the North American release of Dragon Quest XI, Square-Enix’s other flagship RPG. Reviews seem to be positive so far for fans looking for some sweet turn-based RPGing. It’s also the return of an offline DQ title to the consoles – DQIX was released for the DS. The last North American release was 2005. DQX was… there.

Last week also saw the releases of Destiny 2: Forsaken, a FPS MMO RPG. It’s got action, a leveling system, and is a MMO game. And it is fun. God Wars for the Switch was also released. God Wars is a SRPG re-release with new content for Switch owners.

This week sees the release of Mercenaries Saga on the Switch; a compilation of all three SRPG Mercenaries games.

Next week has NISA’s Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk release on the Switch. Then September 21 is the release of Xenoblade Chronicles 2’s expansion Torna: The Golden Country. Looks like the additions made it a standalone title instead of DLC.

The week of September 23 sees the release of Valkyria Chronicles 4. The series come back to consoles with the CANVASS Engine featured in the first game. Like VC3 before it, VC4 is also set during the time period of the 1st game. Also this week is Metal Max Xeno – and it’s hard to place the weirdness of the Metal Max games into an apt description other than wasteland RPG. The last time North America saw a Metal Max game was Metal Saga on the PS2 in 2006.

September must be old-home month for RPGS.
