Shop Watch July 2022

Looks like the end of July is when the fireworks start.

One of the things about being a gamer for several years decades a long time is the lure of games ‘missed’ in the past due to a lack of localization or rarity. The current state of gaming is very mixed. Quite a few of these ‘missed’ games show up (Romancing SaGa 2 and 3; Trials of Mana on the Mana collection), but more recent releases could go away (the 3DS store shutting down). The general consensus here at RPG Land is we enjoy the preservation of titles for long-term enjoyment.

So it makes me happy when a title like Live A Live sees release. I can’t speak for the game and whether or not it’s a classic, but it’s a Squaresoft title from a time when the console RPG selection was limited. And its newfound availability allows me to judge whether or not it’s fun to play.

A week after Live A Live, Switch users will then have Xenoblade Chronicles 3 available on July 29. The CEs for Nintendo games normally go quick but this title crashed the store. I admit to be surprised the series has gone on this long. That’s good for for the fans, and a strange journey for those who played Xenogears back in 1998.

July 29 is also the release of Digimon Survive, another long-running series from ancient times. Like series with Xeno– as the prefix, the Digimon titles appear to have wildly different gameplay mechanics over the years. Survive looks closer to a survival horror title at first, but is also a strategy RPG with Digimon.

Whatever floats your boat or gets you going, I hope you enjoy a safe and entertaining July.
