The TGS demo of Shining Hearts was straightforward: a short dialogue scene followed by a sequence of battle. There were several fights with smallfry before a slightly bigger fry and finally, a fight with the cover monster of Pokemon Silver. (Pictures prove it! Will post tomorrow! Right now I’m exhausted from having to work crazy hours after taking off for TGS.)

The battle system was much what one would expect from a JRPG, with the heroes standing on one side and the foes on the other, everyone taking his or her turn. Ther ewere the typical commands of attack, magic, and item available. There were others that were blocked off, which I found odd since the game is listed as 95% complete. Perhaps the amount of explanation they would require would not be conducive to getting players in and out of the demo quickly enough? Oh well. During battles, the main character could sometimes pair with another for powerful combos, always accompanied by flashing lights and character portraits in the action pose.

The story was told in the pattern of still character shots on a screen while a voice clip reads the displayed text — a storytelling mechanism that seems to be all the rage these days. It was visually pleasing, with birght colors, decent character sprites, and cutesy animated character portraits. Judging by the battle play of the demo, the vibrant screeenshots, and video that was playing, it’s safe to say that Shining Hearts will be visually pleasing.

Everything in the demo was pretty basic and easy, and there’s not a whole lot to it. Shining Hearts seems, from the look I got, to be a very traditional JRPG.
