Tales of Phantasia for DoCoMo phones: TGS 2009 Hands-on

By Janelle | September 26, 2009 at 7:25 am

Ugh. After playing the Seiken Densetsu 2 cell phone demo that executed cell phone porting so well, I had very high hopes for the Tales of Phantasia cell phone port, but my hopes were shattered very, very quickly.

Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana) for DoCoMo phones: TGS 2009 Hands-on

By Janelle | September 26, 2009 at 7:23 am

From my fond, SNES-controllered memories of Secret of Mana, I didn’t expect to find Seiken Densetsu 2 on the list of “games you can play with one hand.” In fact, at first glance, I wouldn’t put most action RPGs on that list. But Square Enix took this classic and put it on a cell phone, and it actually works pretty well.

Ni no Kuni: TGS 2009 Hands-on

By Janelle | September 24, 2009 at 10:51 am

Ni no Kuni has been noteworthy and famous since its announcement because it represents Studio Ghibli’s first foray into game making.  Level-5 has been promoting this one extensively, and I got a chance to dig into the demo today.  If the game follows the trend of the demo, it’ll be a traditional RPG with a really high-gloss veneer of fantasy and wonder.

Valkyria Chronicles 2: TGS 2009 Hands-on

By Janelle | September 24, 2009 at 9:46 am

At the Lanseal Academy, the students nonchalantly chat after class, opening their lockers to remove grenades, rifles and rocket launchers. The image is funny, but it looks like Valkyria Chronicles 2‘s school theme shouldn’t distract from the original’s great gameplay.

Dragon Quest VI DS: TGS 2009 Hands-on

By Janelle | September 24, 2009 at 8:52 am

The Dragon Quest VI booth had two demo files available: a demo of the prologue, and a Level 27 file with a full party. I opted for the prologue file, which began with the hero and his two friends preparing to attack a castle under the cover of darkness to defeat someone named Mudo. After a dragon-summoning sequence that made good use of the DS’s dual screens, the trio arrived at the ominously empty castle.

Lunar Harmony of Silver Star: TGS 2009 Hands-on

By Janelle | September 24, 2009 at 8:20 am

I picked up the PSP’s upcoming LUNAR remake in the middle of the first icy cave. The first thing that jumped out was obviously the graphical overhaul. The sprites have been given a nice treatment, but I was especially impressed at first by the color and smoothness of the environments.

End of Eternity (Resonance of Fate): TGS 2009 Hands-on

By Janelle | September 24, 2009 at 7:49 am

One part of Sega’s booth that was drawing some attention was the End of Eternity section. This is the game that’ll be called Resonance of Fate in English, even though the titles don’t seem to have any relation to each other.

Phantasy Star Portable 2: TGS 2009 Hands-on

By Janelle | September 24, 2009 at 7:04 am

The first demo that I picked up today at the Tokyo Game Show was Phantasy Star Portable 2. Even though the line was empty, a booth worker stalled me, asking me to wait for a little while, though there were empty PSPs. I was a bit confused until I saw her rounding up two other people. This was going to be a multiplayer demo! Good thing I had no idea what to do prior to our 2 on 2 grudge match.

Aion: hands on preview

By Michael | September 8, 2009 at 4:20 am

Aion is NCSoft’s newest, upcoming MMORPG for PC. Aion’s world of Atreia is divided into two halves, with a chaotic Abyss between them. The two factions, the Elyos and the Asmodians, are enemies of old. They have deep seeded hatred and distrust of each other based on a past event known at the “cataclysm.” The time in which the two halves of the world where divided and separated by a chaotic area in-between. In recent time they have begun exploring the abyss. Within the Abyss, the once-lost power of flight is now commonplace. The Abyss is where the two factions fight each other for supremacy.

Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road (Riz Zoawd) hands-on preview

By Heath | July 20, 2009 at 1:14 pm

The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road, known as Riz Zoawd in Japan, hurls the player right into the action by cutting the whole tornado incident down to about 30 seconds. It cuts out munchkins and falling houses as well, getting Dorothy’s fine ass right to work on the Yellow Brick Road.
