These new .hack//Link details include information on an optional new multiplayer dungeon, the vehicle by which players get there, and plenty of images of the characters (past and present) in a state of transformation called “Xth Form.”
In the middle of the story, Tokio will meet a princess he previously encountered in a dream, which will trigger a series of events that will enable him to travel to the new dungeon. Inside the dungeon, called the Final Labyrinth, phantom monsters taking the shape of Kite, notable hero of the .hack series, and his old companions will appear to battle Tokio.
After the Labyrinth’s trials have been completed and characters have fulfilled all the requirements, they can “Job Extend” and power up into a form called “Xth Form.” In this form, characters’ outward appearance will change, they will gain new skills, their attacks will power up and increase in range, their number of combos will increase, and all their attacks will execute much more flashily. Characters who are not Tokio will also gain improved combination attacks with Tokio called “Cross Rengeki.”
For navigating the Ocean of Time and reaching the Labyrinth, .hack//Link provides the player with the “Gran Hoel,” a submarine outfitted with all kinds of gadgets, including a shop, a timeline and reference guide to The World, and a log book with information on party members.
Additionally, a room for changing special accessories is available called the Dress Room, and there are several Private Suite rooms available as well. In the Dress room, players can alter the outfits of characters with different weapons, helmets and armor. Spoils from fighting rare Lucky Animals in the fields can be traded in for special items and accessories that can be equipped in the Dress Room.
The Suite Rooms are where characters can gather to talk. Depending on the combination of characters in a room, this will result in Friend Skits, special dialogues that play out and can be recorded in a book.
To begin Link Play online with up to three players, first an invitation must be received from the “Brigade.” Once an invitation has been received, the player can select the dungeon difficulty level. Inside the online lobby, players can display profiles and team up to take on dungeons, deciding on a strategy. Advancing through the dungeon also will let players compete for special treasures during Bonus Time, where one must find a switch to open a special box.
Reaching the end of five blocks of the dungeon, groups will have to face one of the Trinity, called Schutsel: Regen, Donna and Elption. After defeating the Schutsel, a miniature Guardian will appear to heal the party and bestow favors and bonuses.
