Japan’s fiscal year 2009 hardware/software sales + analysis

The numbers are in, and Japan’s best-selling hardware and software (at least the top five) have been announced. The industry hauled in 549 billion yen from Japanese gamers from the end of March last year till just a few days ago. Here’s what brought in the biggest chunks of that cash.

Nerd news: Hamauzu leaves Square Enix

Fans who know enough about games to have favorite game music composers (this writer and perhaps you, reader of obscure RPG website) will find it noteworthy that Masashi Hamauzu has left Square Enix, hot off the release of Final Fantasy XIII. No reasons for the departure were reported, but like other recent Square Enix quits, perhaps he felt his years at the company had been too linear, and he needed a new town.

EA Merges with itself

In true EA business fashion it has merged with itself, combining two of its studios into one.  BioWare and Mythic studios have now been combined to form a large RPG/MMO studio.  This newly formed team will be led by Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder and general manager of BioWare.
