RPG Land’s Monthly Top 5: May

By Heath | May 8, 2010 at 10:30 am

What RPGs are you, dear internet, wanting the most?  Here are the top 5 as of the month of May.  The top spot may surprise you as much as it did me.

5) Dragon Quest IX (DS)
Have you played a Dragon Quest game lately? For many gamers, this series is nothing more than a bunch of long grinds, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Take last year’s DS title Dragon Quest V, for example. To quote our forum member LiQuid!, “Haven’t beaten DQ5 yet, but holyfijuckepic. I’ve already been orphaned, escaped slavery, found love, married some other, bitchy chick, sired twins, and now I am schooling them in the ways of KICKING THE EVERLOVINGSHLIT OUT OF MONSTERS! It’s so amazing!!! Best JRPG ever created? I don’t want to let Secret of Mana be dethroned, but ####, how have I not played DQ5 before now?”

4) World of Warcraft Cataclysm (PC)
A highly anticipated (obviously) expansion to the biggest MMORPG in the Land. Check out the class update previews links from this MMORPGLand column.

3) Final Fantasy XIV (PC, PS3)
It being an MMORPG and, to some, raping the franchise, hasn’t stopped people from wanting it. Paul D. says of this title, “FF11 brought me into MMO games and FF14 is going to keep me there for a long long time.”

2) Valkyria Chronicles 2 (PSP)
The first game was one of the best strategy RPGs of all time. It’s no wonder a lot of people are looking forward to its sequel. Check out our hands-on preview here and learn more about what to expect.

1) Alpha Protocol (PS3, 360, PC)
As release time nears, anticipation heightens, vaulting this one to number one. Within RPG Land’s staff, Janelle is particularly interested in this one. Many comments thus far seem to be expressing cautious optimism. With recent releases including Yakuza 3, Resonance of Fate, and Infinite Space, Sega looks to continue its solid RPG roll with this one in June.
